Due to the global reach of the Internet, antique clock collectors are now purchasing online, with the most popular purchases being antique grandfather, cuckoo or long case clocks, with a few buyers just looking for antique clock parts.
So, how does one go about making an informed purchase online?
First, it is important to understand that antique clocks belonging to the 15th through to the 17th century are mainly found in museums. A small amount of these are privately owned. Due to the Internet, more of these clocks are available for purchase online. However, expect to pay out large sums of money.
Clocks that were made in the 1800 and 1900s are more likely to be available, as they were produced in much larger quantities. Ensure that if you do purchase online you do a get a clock appraisal otherwise you could end up with a fake.
Make sure you are well-versed in the terminology that antique specialists use, so that you fully understand what is being said or negotiated.
